See (and bookmark) the UVM Honors College for information about the Honors College program at the University of Vermont. As many of you likely know, the Honors College imposes uniform first and second year course requirements for all of its enrolled students, regardless of their major. The junior and senior requirements are however dependent on each student’s college or academic program.
Honors College students enrolled in the College of Engineering and Mathematical Sciences (CEMS) need to fulfill the following:
A unit specific three-credit junior level course identified as carrying “honors” designation. In addition to ordinary coursework, students are required to complete additional work that should help them prepare their honors thesis proposal and help them succeed in their research project. This extra work may consist of preparing an annotated bibliography related to the student’s research topic, constructing experimental apparatus, writing computer programs, etc. Students are required to declare their chosen course before the end of the add/drop period of the second semester of their junior year using this declaration form.
Prepare a detailed, written thesis proposal, following the guidelines on this coversheet. The thesis proposal is due before the end of the second semester of the student’s junior year.
Enroll in a six-credit sequence of Honors Thesis Research in the senior year in the student’s major in CEMS. This course is usually taken as two, 3.0 credit courses.
Defend a completed honors thesis before the student’s honors thesis committee by the end of the student’s senior year.
CEMS Students who have at least a 3.0 cumulative grade-point average in their sophomore and junior courses can apply for enrollment in the CEMS Honors Thesis Program by completing Step 2 in the previous section. (Step 1 is also recommended.) Accepted students will then receive College Honors by completing Steps 3 and 4.
