Brewin' outdoors with the dog.  What could go wrong?

I am Matt Welz, a lecturer in the Mathematics Department here at the University of Vermont. I got my B.S. in Mathematics and Physics at the University of Mary Washington (nee Mary Washington College) in Fredericksburg, VA and my M.S in Mathematics at UVM.  I just finished my Ph.D. here at UVM as well.   My current research is on applications of fusion systems to finite group theory.   Before coming to UVM, I spent a couple years working as an actuary in Washington D.C. 

In my free time, I am trying to rehab a bad ?????(no diagnosis) in my leg and get back to running (which is seeming more and more unlikely).  Also, I like to muck around in my garden (fruit, veggies, and hops), find/listen to music, travel, cook and wrestle my young son and Bernese Mountain Dog.  I have been particularly enamored with brewing beer and brew whenever I have time (not too much lately!).  Sometimes, it even goes pretty well:  local competition and Sam Adams competition.  If you can think of something better for me to be doing please e-mail me - I am open to suggestions!

This spring I am teaching Math 241, Math 19, and  Math 20.
