Textbook: Applied Combinatorics (5th Edition),
by Alan Tucker
We will cover most of the material in Chapters 5,8,9 and the Appendix.
Office Hours: Tuesday and Thursday 10:30 -12:00 (except powder days). I am in my office most of the time: email me and I'm sure we can find a time to meet.
Examinations:
The test dates are as yet not determined. There may be an in-class componant and a take-home componant for each test. If you are ill and must miss an exam, you must notify me before the exam is given in order to be allowed to take a makeup. Any student with disabilities who is eligible for accommodations must notify me explicitly if they wish to receive individual accommodations.
All handouts will be available on the Math 173 Web page at:
http://www.emba.uvm.edu/~dinitz/teaching/math173.s08.html
Homework: There will be homework assignments every week. These homeworks sets are an important part of this course. These are to be done in a neat and orderly fashon. Have them ready to hand in at the beginning of each class. They will be looked at and graded.
Try to have a look at the web-site from time to time. I will post assignments, some hints, solutions and maybe bonus problems on the website. If you need help getting on the web, come talk to me.
Computers: Some assignments near the end of the semester will require the use of the software package Mathematica. This is installed on all machines on the EM computer network and the University has a site license that allows you to install Mathematica on your own computer. Details on how to do this are at http://www.emba.uvm.edu/math/mathematica/ . You are encouraged to write up your homework sets using mathematica.
