Member Bio:Michael E. Karpeles (Mek) is a junior at UVM studying CS in the College of Engineering and Mathematical Sciences. Mek has been a CSSA member since 2005. This semester he is co-teaching CS-095 | CS-195 with Gary Johnson and Professor Xindong Wu. Outside of school, Michael works for a micro-miniature wireless sensors company called MicroStrain (Williston, VT). His responsibilities include *nix server administration, Apache configurations, python server-side web application programming, database management, sensor data parsing and extraction, and graphic/web design. Currently, Mek is the Vice President and Secretary of the CSSA at UVM. In his free time, Mek enjoys using Linux, contributing to Open Source projects, coding often, playing/writing/listening to music, cooking, and investing. Michael hopes to make significant advances in the field of knowledge identification and distribution systems. Mek feels that knowledge should be made “free” (as in freedom) to the public. It is our job as programmers to develop systems that make distributing, organizing, searching for, ranking, and retrieving knowledge more efficient and available. By developing systems which make knowledge more freely and easily accessible to the public, we can increase the effectiveness of peer to peer communication and stimulate the growth of new knowledge.
