What is Engineering Management?
- "The art and science of planning, organizing, leading,
and controlling the creative and innovative application of engineering
science, technology, and resources for producing goods and services
that fulfill commercial and social needs."
- "Bringing thoughtful and wise organization to the Engineering
process."
More on Engineering Management...
- Each of us may have an idea of what Engineering Management is, even though
we may not really know how to define it precisely. Engineering
Management (EM), however, implies that it is a little different
from management or engineering per se. Intuitively we get from
engineering the sense of applying physics, sciences, and mathematics
to come out with something, generally a tangible object or some
physical thing. This is precisely the same sense we have in EM.
In EM, we add to qualitative concepts and philosophies, how to
solve system problems by applying sciences, physics and mathematics,
whenever appropriate. The 'something' here, however, is not a
tangible object though. It can be a concept, an abstract idea,
a schedule, a method, or any such thing. This is really not so
different than some engineering, since engineering not always
produces tangible objects or physical things. Reliability engineering
is one such an example.
Why Do We Need Engineering Managers?
- Engineering Management prepares men and women for effective
performance as leaders in today's complex environment as engineers,
managers and educators. They are capable of designing, implementing,
operating and optimizing sophisticated high technology enterprises
in manufacturing, government or industrial service sectors of
our global economy.
- In today's economy traditional approaches to manufacturing
and service systems are not robust or efficient enough to provide
effective competition. There is a need to see the business unit
as a complete, technology driven enterprise and to integrate system
components to ensure that the company thrives in global competition.
In such an environment engineers must have excellent technical
and managerial skills to cope effectively with the continuous
change that will take place during their careers.
