THE COURSE:

TEXT: Introduction to Discrete Mathematics by Burgmeier and Kost. This book is available in the Mathmatics Department office, Lord House, not in the bookstore. We will cover Chapter 1, introduction. Chapter 2, induction and recursion. Chapter 3, modular arithmetic. Chapter 4, public key encryption. As time permits we will cover selected topics from Chapters 5-8, complex numbers, error correcting codes, and introduction to graph theory. The course is designed as a "bridge course" between calculus and higher mathematics.

GRADING: There will be a total of 200 points to be earned in the course. There are 4 homework assignments worth 10 points each. There are 3 Mathematics labs worth 10 points each. There are 2 midterms worth 35 points each. The final exam is worth 60 points.

Additional homework will be assigned at the end of each class. You are expected to complete each assignment before the next class. As time permits, we will go over problems in class. It is your responsibility to keep up with the work and to get help if you are having trouble. Please come see me outside of class if you need individual help.

EXAM SCHEDULE: (subject to change)

MAKE-UP TESTS: Make-up tests will be given only in the event of illness, religious holiday, or a genuine emergency. In such a case, you must notify me before the test. If I am not in the office, leave a phone number where you can be reached so that we can arrange for you to take the test as soon as possible.

SPECIAL ACCOMODATIONS: Students with documented special needs should inform the instructor during the first week of classes. Any special needs will be kept completely confidential. For more information on accommodations, see Academic Support Programs.

ACADEMIC INTEGRITY: You are expected to adhere to the UVM Code of Academic Integrity at all times. All work submitted for a grade is expected to be your own. You may work with your friends on homework assignments, but you each need to do the work yourself and answer questions in your own words.

WEB PAGE: I have set up a homepage for the class. There you will find a copy of the syllabus and the homework assignments. Point your browser to:
